George T Washington Family History

In the beginning: 1865, George B. Washington a former slave, settled on Cape Cod in Hyannis in a neighborhood called Happy Hollow with a four foot long wheelbarrow starting Washington Garbage Removal, The FIRST!

Five years after the Emancipation, George T. Washington joined his dad with his horse Barney and a wagon expanded the garbage company to include trash removal. Trash was buried and garbage was fed to the hogs on his farm in West Hyannisport Massachusetts.

George T. Washington’s daughter Ella married Eugene Tobey, a Native American from Mashpee. Their son Lawrence S. Tobey, Sr. joined his grandfather and replaced the horse and wagon with trucks, changing the name to Washington Trucking, thus expanding the business to include local businesses and residential customers. Washington Trucking had evolved from the original ex- slave owner with a wheelbarrow, to the industrial era.

Next, Lawrence “Sonny” Tobey, Jr. with brothers Nathaniel (“Nat”) and George joined their dad. Sonny introduced container service to Cape Cod customers, another first, just as his great, great, great Grandfather George B. Washington had done in 1865.
